Building Your Own Web Page
If you’re considering putting together a web page, we recommend you start with the free web space that comes with all Backroads accounts, except the Light Plan. HTML isn’t particularly difficult, it just takes a little getting used to. There are several excellent HTML authoring tools on the market today. Netscape Composer and Microsoft’s Front Page are on the low end of the scale, but will give you an idea of what it’s all about. If you’re serious about web design, learn some basic HTML, then spend the money to get a high quality design tool like NetObjects Fusion, Macromedia’s Dreamweaver or Adobe’s GoLive

Your free web space can be accessed using any standard FTP program or from any of the design tools that include file transfer functions. Customers with the family plan have 1MB of webspace to post their personal web page. Your homepage address will be: The settings for the two most popular ftp programs and several of the design tools are listed below:

WS_FTP: At Session Properties, enter for the host name, the UserID is your logon name, and the password is your regular password. Click connect to go to the main program screen. There are two sections of the program screen. The left side is what is on your computer and the right side is what is on the Backroads server. Find the files you want to publish on the left side. Highlight the file and click on the right arrows in the middle of the screen to make the file public. If you want to edit the file on your computer, highlight the file and click on view. Make sure you edit the files on your computer and not the ones on the server in case you accidently do something you don't want to do. If you are using WS_FTP95 or WS_FTP95 LE, at the "Sessions Properties" screen, click on the "Advanced" tab and place a check mark in the "Passive Transfers" box.

Cute_FTP: Use a quick connect to link to the Backroads server. Use your username, password, and the host address of The main functions of the program are the same as WS_FTP, but the view option is the sunglasses button and you can drag the files back and forth instead of using arrows.

Netscape Composer: After you have made your page, save it to your hard drive. Click on Publish. Give the page a title name and an HTML file name. For the publishing location, type in Type in your username and password and click OK.

MS Front Page: Open your existing Front Page web page. When the author permission screen comes up, type in your name and password and click OK. Click on Publish. Enter for the web address and enter for the ftp server name. Enter your username and password and click on finish.

MS Front Page Express: To post a page using Front Page Express you must have the Web Publishing Wizard installed. To make sure you have this go to Start, Settings, Control Panel and then choose Add/Remove Programs. Then click on the Windows Setup tab. Double click on Internet Tools and check the box in front of Web Publishing Wizard if it is not already checked. Click on OK and then click on Apply. If the check was not already there it will ask you for your Windows CD. Once installed open up your Front Page Express web page. Then go to File and choose Save As. When the box comes up enter a title for your page and for location type, "" and then click OK. You will then be prompted to enter your user name and password.
